Where Fancy Text Works in Minecraft
Your username is off limits: Minecraft Java names are 3 to 16 letters, numbers and underscores, and nothing else. But Minecraft shows Unicode almost everywhere else, which is why big servers are full of ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ ranks and fancy item names.
| Where | Fancy text? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Username | No | Letters, numbers and underscores only. |
| Chat | Usually | Works on most servers unless a plugin filters it. |
| Books and signs | Yes | Paste works in books; signs depend on your version. |
| Anvil item names | Yes | Great for named swords, pets and trophies. |
| Server ranks, scoreboards, menus | Yes | Set them in your plugin configs. |
| Server list MOTD | Partly | Depends on your server software and client version. |
Small Caps: The Server Favourite
If you’ve played on a big network, you’ve seen it: ᴠɪᴘ, ᴍᴏᴅ, ʙᴜɪʟᴅᴇʀ, ꜱᴛᴀᴛꜱ. Small caps look tidy next to the blocky pixel font and line up well in menus and scoreboards. If you run a server, using it for every rank and menu title is one of the quickest ways to make your server feel polished.
Fun Ideas for Players
- Named weapons: rename a sword in an anvil to ⚔ 𝔈𝔵𝔠𝔞𝔩𝔦𝔟𝔲𝔯 ⚔ or ᛞᚱᚨᚷᛟᚾᛒᚨᚾᛖ in runes.
- Pets: name tags like ♡ 𝓑𝓾𝓽𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓼 ♡ for your dog or cat.
- Shop signs and books: a bold or small caps title, plain text underneath.
Tips
- Test a style in a book first; Minecraft’s fallback font doesn’t include every symbol.
- Keep your server name plain in server lists so players can find it.
- Use one style for ranks and another for announcements to keep chat readable.
